View all opening hoursThe site at Enniskillen Castle has a long history. The buildings range from the medieval to the modern. The Castle has seen huge changes in its 600 year history and the buildings here allow us to trace these changes from the medieval Maguire stronghold built in 1428 to William Cole’s Plantation Castle remodelled after 1614, and later the military barracks on site from the end of the 18th century.
Situated along the River Erne, the strategic location of the Castle has been important throughout its history. The Keep was to become the site of much resistance. The upper part of the building dates largely to the Plantation period when William Cole rebuilt much of the upper sections of the Castle Keep. At this time, he also added the Watergate complete by 1614.
